Joe Dever’s Freeway Warrior books have been mentioned to us by several listeners and I know I must have mentioned them on the show at least once. I have recently discovered that there is a Kickstarter for them which I have backed.

From the Kickstarter:
Joe Dever’s Freeway Warrior is a Game Book series of four post apocalyptic adventures, where the mood is somewhere between Mad Max and John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath. In the Game Books, you take on the role of Cal Phoenix, and your mission is to help a group of survivors on an exodus from Texas, where food is running low, to California which is believed to have made it through the nuclear winter in better shape. You will face a lot of challenges along the way, not the least from the terrorist clans with ties to the organization who triggered the nuclear disaster. The small colony has to go west in order to survive, crossing the post apocalyptic wasteland of chaos och criminal gangs.
Joe Dever wrote the Game Books in the late eighties, but has updated the timeline and changed Cal Phoenix’s story to better fit in today’s society. The story takes place in a near future, (2033) in the new edition of the series.
If the project is funded, Åskfågeln will release all four books in the series. The launch of the first book will be at Easter 2017, at the Swedish gaming convention GothCon in Gothenburg. We estimate that we will be able to release all four Game Books by the end of 2018.
After the success of Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf in Swedish, we started to consider releasing even more Game Books in Swedish. Freeway Warrior fits our profile for many different reasons. The Game Books are written by Joe Dever, who we are already happy to work with on the Lone Wolf product line. Freeway Warrior takes place in classic old west territories – including Tombstone! – and we have just released the fourth edition of our Wild West role-playing game Western (so far only in Swedish). With a main character named Cal Phoenix, it was settled – since Phoenix is the English version of Fenix – the name of our Swedish gaming magazine!
